About The Painting - The Last Supper

The Last Supper, a masterpiece and a classic painting as considered by most of art critics across the world, is a mural painting that was created specially for Da Vinci's patron Duke Ludovico Sforza and Duchess Beatrice d'Este.

Although one of his finest works The Last Supper is seen more as a historical representation than a painting. The painting glorifies a supper scene where Jesus is sharing bread with his twelve disciples including Judas who betrayed him later on. This betrayal is probably one of the reasons behind the popularity of this painting.

Regarded as one of the most valued paintings in the world, The Last Supper has immense depth, which has been mixed well with realism by Da Vinci to give it beautiful dimensions. The Last Supper has portrayed effectively the different reactions of each of the disciples after Jesus announced that one of his disciples would betray him.

The highlight of the painting is the various degrees and levels of shock and anger displayed on the faces of all twelve disciples'. Judas is shown as part of a group of three disciples and is standing in the shadow wearing a blue and green garb with a withdrawn look. Da Vinci has worked well through the detailing and Judas can be seen with a small bag, which probably contains the silver because of which he betrayed Jesus.

One of the remarkable features of this painting is that fact that none of the 12 disciples have their back towards us and there is a subtle hallow over all the disciples except Judas. A realistic and dramatic effect was given to the painting by making Judas lean back into the shadow. There are many enriching aspects to the painting like the Lunettes have been painted with Sforza coats-of-arms. Today, The Last Supper remains as one of the most enigmatic yet realistic paintings by Leonardo Da Vinci.
