About The Painting - Sunset at Ivry |
| |
Having learnt drawing by attending evening school, Armand Guillaumin studied at the Academie Suisse in
1861, where he met the pioneers of French Impressionism, Paul Cezanne and Camille Pissaro. His influence
on the work of both these geniuses is a reflection of a life long friendship.
|
| |
Sunset at Ivry, painted in 1873, is a beautiful landscape painting in bright palette. The use of intense
colors is typical of Guillaumin's style of painting. Armand is best known for his Paris landscapes and
the area around Estérel close to the Mediterranean coast in the Côte d'Azur region of France.
|
| |
The Sunset at Ivry is one of Guillaumin's best-known landscapes and involves the viewer with its use of
perspective and winding pathways in an industry themed illustration. The smoke form the chimneys of
the industries on the other side of the river are prominent, so is the essence of romance that is
heightened by the setting - sunset and reflections in the water.
|
| |
Guillaumin's wonderful imagination and expertise can be seen in the Sunset at Ivry. The volutes of
chimney smoke snakes into the air and contrast starkly against an orange and reddish sunset like
triumphing flags, saluting the industrial revolution!
|
| |
While Armand Guillaumin did not become as famous or as recognized as his friends, Paul Cézanne and
Camille Pissaro, his art is now being rediscovered for the subjective themes and expertise in using
expressive colors that indicate an anticipation of the Fauvism movement.
|
| |
The Sunset at Ivry provides a wide angle for interpretation, to the viewers and allows them to admire
the beauty, realism, and vibrancy with a simple theme and attractive colors that are so important
for a good landscape painting.
