Painter: Paul Cézanne

About The Artist - Paul Cézanne (19 January, 1839 - 22 October, 1906)

Paul Cézanne is a French Post-Impressionist painter famous for his rendition of Cubism in all his paintings.

About The Painting - Still Life with Apples and Oranges

Still Life with Apples and Oranges has a simplicity that appeals to every one who has seen this painting. Cézanne tried to bring out the simplicity in highlighting some apples and oranges and created a comparison with the stillness of life. He has also rendered shades of contrasting and bright colors against a dark background to bring the essence of the painting to life.

This is one of his most famous paintings and he has tried to portray how geometric essentials can be used effectively to highlight different objects in a painting that is purely imaginative. His main idea was to "treat nature by the cylinder, the sphere, the cone."

One of the most beautiful aspects of the painting is Cezanne's attention to details that he has picked up from observing nature in different seasons and different forms. The result is Still Life with Apples and Oranges that renders beautifully a profound exploration of the binocular vision leading to the creation of different but simultaneous visual perceptions.

These perceptions have given the painting more realism, depth and have brought in a spatial relationship. There are two different views projected by Cézanne through this painting: one is that of visual perception at varying degrees. The second is his observation coupled with the desire to capture the meaning behind his own perceptions.

Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest painters of all time had to say this about Paul: "My one and only master . . . Cezanne was like the father of us all".
