Painter: William Bouguereau

About The Artist - William Bouguereau (November 30, 1825 - August 19, 1905)

William Adolphe Bouguereau was a famous French painter who used mythological and historical subjects in his paintings.

About The Painting - L'Amour Au Papillon

Bouguereau had painted around 126 compositions in his lifetime and had won the Prix de Rome award. He had enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France to study art from 1846 to 1850. He opposed impressionists and is considered one of the greatest 19th century painters from France.

Bouguereau's L'Amour Au Papillon brings out a subtle innocence in the cupid who stands out in the dark foreground as a guiding light. Bouguereau had used natural colors to depict sublime and fanciful elements in this painting. He was able to bring out the essence of an idyllic realm amidst the ugliness of the surroundings.

Bouguereau's L'Amour Au Papillon was seen as a fresh insight into an unearthly universe surrounded by transcendent beauty that presented a stark contrast in the face of pessimism. This is one of Bouguereau's best works and has a balance of both darkness and light; hope and despair. He had sent a message through this painting: it was the duty of the more fortunate people in the society to take care of the poor.

L'Amour Au Papillon rose to popularity because every viewer found a different perspective in the composition. For some people, it showed a ray of hope breaking through eternal darkness in the foreground while for others; it was the innocence of love brought out through subtle expressions. But there was one common viewpoint, which is that the painting sent out positive messages. That was the high point of L'Amour Au Papillon.

L'Amour Au Papillon is a perfect example of a fine mix of aesthetics, natural colors, brightness-contrast, fantasy and realism. This was regarded as a composition of absolute and unparallel beauty.
